AUDITIONS: THE LITTLE MERMAID(S) - FAQs

WHAT IS THE LITTLE MERMAID(S)?
The Little Mermaid(s) is this year's middle school production. With the exception of Tech Week and performances, all rehearsals take place during Theatre class time. As such, it is a requirement that all students be in either an acting role or a production role.

WHAT WILL AN ACTING ROLE LOOK LIKE?
The plays have the usual combination of lead and ensemble roles.

ARE THERE PRODUCTION ROLES AVAILABLE?
Absolutely. Students (particularly 7th and 8th grade) who have an interest in directing, writing, stage management can fulfill their Mermaids requirement in one of these areas. Because these roles require a more developed sense of concentration and maturity, we're looking for students who can work more independently (but will always be under faculty supervision). If a student is interested in such roles, please email Ms. Patterson (spatterson@oakarts.org) and let her know what type of role they're interested in.

CAN A STUDENT HAVE BOTH AN ACTING AND PRODUCTION ROLE?
A student cast in the ensemble can have a production role.

IS THIS PRODUCTION A REQUIREMENT?
Yes. However, if a student has a performance conflict, they can fulfill this requirement via a production role and need not be present at performances. Students will receive a daily rehearsal grade (score of 1-4) and do weekly reflections.

WHEN ARE AUDITIONS?
Tues 9/19, Wed 9/20, Thu 9/21, and Fri 9/22 if needed. These take place during class time.

IS EACH STUDENT GUARANTEED A ROLE?
Of some kind, yes. However, if a student struggles with fulfilling a role's requirements (behaviorally and with clear heads-up to their guardian) we reserve the right to remove a student from a role and offer them an alternative form of the curriculum.

IS THIS THE ONLY PRODUCTION THIS YEAR OPEN TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS?
Heavens, no. They are welcome to audition for the New Works Festival, ...And Jesus Moonwalks the Mississippi, and The Threepenny Opera.

WHO IS DIRECTING?
All four middle school faculty members, with support from our amazing high school Theatre students who are teacher aides in our classes everyday.

IS THERE ANY COST TO DO THIS PRODUCTION?
No. While we may ask students to bring in clothing as costuming, there is no fee to be in the production and no expectation of having to purchase anything.

WHEN ARE TECH WEEK & PERFORMANCES?
Tech Sat 12/2 10-6, Tech Sun 12/3 10-6 (doing two of the plays each day)
Performances are Thu 12/7, Fri 12/8, Sat 12/9 all at 7pm. There is also a 2pm show on Sat 12/9 (so Saturday is a two-show day).

Auditions - Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (High School only)

Auditions for our Winter Small Show - John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea - will take place SEP 19-22 after school in Room 202 from 4:45-6:30pm. Callbacks will occur, as needed, on 9/21 or 9/22.

Students interested in auditioning must come to the first day of auditions (Tue Sep 19 at 4:45pm) and sign up for a slot to audition either on Tuesday or to come back Wednesday (we don't have the capacity to take appointments before the first day of auditions).

Please come prepared to move. Some students will be called back later in the week.

This play is only two characters. We will double cast. This means only 4 actors will be cast (hence why it's the Winter Small Show).

While it's written for 1 female and 1 male, all gender identities are encouraged to audition.

REHEARSAL DATES/TIMES: Will be announced at the audition.
TECH + PERFORMANCES: Tech is Tues 1/16 and Wed 1/17 from 1:35-7pm. Performances are Thu 1/18, Fri 1/19, Sat 1/20 at 7pm. There is a matinee on Sun 1/21.

ELIGIBILITY: If a student is academically ineligible after the end of Quarter 1, they will be removed from the production.

NOTE: This play features mature content. Those uncomfortable with profanity or discussions of sexuality are advised not to audition for this particular production. Those cast will be asked to take the scripts home to share with their guardians.
